wouldn’t be necessary to keep the fire roads open, Luke said, apparently the park service wouldn’t be fighting fires. Luke reminded the Supervisors of the action they took last spring on the Mt. Marshall Fire Road, asking that these trails be kept open for fire and rescue purposes. “After all we went through to keep them open, I hate to see them closed,” Luke said.
Herbert Foster agreed. He didn’t think the fire trails should be closed.
BOBBY CARTER, a member of the audience at the Supervisors’ work session, thought that any hiker in the “wilderness area” would appreciate the trails being kept open, if he found himself needing help.
Mrs. Aide Hollman said she thought the Park Service wanted the Wilderness area in order to protect the park. “I think they’re trying to keep people out. So many people are killing out what they’re trying to preserve. So many people go into one area they kill the underbrush.”
J.R. Latham thought the Park Service would have more of a problem policing the park without the fire trials. “If they close these trails there’ll be more poaching of game,” he said.
