PETE LUKE will support Madison County’s opposition to Wilderness designation for parts of the Shenandoah National Park, when the District Planning Commission meets today (Thursday) in Culpeper. Luke, chairman of Rappahannock’s Board of Supervisors and one of the county’s representatives on the district jjlanning commission, told the rest of the Supervisors at a special work session last Monday night that he planned to take that stand, if it was all right with them. Since Monday night’s meeting was just a “work session,” no formal action was taken, but the Supervisors told Luke to go ahead.
The Wilderness designation had come up at a meeting of the county planning commission the previous Wednesday (see separate article) and Luke reported to the Supervisors what he understood about the bill.
Fire roads and trails into the park from the foot of the mountain would not be kept open, Luke said. All access to the Wilderness areas would be controlled “from the top” of the Ridge. The purpose of the Wilderness designation would be to provide a “wilderness experience” for those people who might want it, Luke said.
