Thank you for the space you gave my letter. Mr. Harris and I have had our fun, without contributing very much, I fear, to the enlightenment and understanding of the public. We intend to answer his questions in our communications program, but I would like to comment — without adjectives or innuendoes — on the problems facing a utility these days.
First, Vepco is subject to the same relentless inflationary increases in the cost^of labor, materials and supplies, fuel, taxes, cost of capital and environmental improvements as any other business. Like almost all utilities around the nation, it has been forced to seek higher rates. The reaction of the public is predictable and understandable.
