RAPPAHANNOCK’S Supervisors have accepted Fanning Baumgardner’s resignation as assistant county zoning administrator, but have asked that he continue to serve as county engineer, building inspector, secretary to the Planning Commission and assistant to the Water and Sanitation Authority. The Supervisors directed Pete Luke to work out “an arrangement” that would make Baumgardner’s technical expertise available to the zoning administrator even though he has resigned as his assistant.
Baumgardner’s resignation was effective June 12, but last Thursday was the first time the Supervisors had met since then, and the first time they’d had a chance to take formal action. In his letter of resignation, Baumgardner had said he would remain in the other posts if the Supervisors, the chairman of the Planning Commission, and the Chairman of the Water and Sanitation Authority wanted him to do so.
The Supervisors discussed the resignation in an hour-long executive session, also attended by Zoning Administrator Evan McNear and Planning Commission Chairman Herbert Barksdale. One reason for Baumgardner’s resignation was an alleged conflict with McNear over administrative procedures within the zoning office. This dispute came to a climax over discussion of the proposed sale and development of the Rappahannock Ski Area.
