A NUMBER of new highway safety laws passed by the 1975 General Assembly became effective June 1. John T. Hanna, director, Highway Safety Division of Virginia said major highway safety legislation of statewide interest included: • The legal definition of bicycles now includes those with “helper” motors rated less than one brake horsepower, which produce only ordinary pedaling speeds up to a maximum of 20 miles per hour, provided such bicycles so equipped shall not be operated upon any highway or public vehicular area in Virginia by any person under the age of 16 years.
• Dependent children, at least 16 years old, of military personnel can operate a motor vehicle in Virginia using their home state operator license.
• It is unlawful to sell any device or mechanism in Virginia which would detect radar on the highways.
• The Department of Highways and Transportation has statutory authority to designate specific traffic lanes for use by traffic moving in a particular direction
