EVERYBODY went around last fall predicting it would be a hard winter, and they were certainly right. Hard isn’t the word for it! There just isn’t any proper word for it.
It is interesting to observe, nevertheless, about how our technological society is scrambled by cold weather. Pipes burst, furnaces stop working, the electricity goes off, roads are blocked, pumps freeze up, cars won’t start. The people who manage best are those with wood stoves or fireplaces, draw wells, kerosene lamps and privies—and the “progressives” can say what they want, Rappahannock is fortunate, not unfortunate, in the number of households it has which are equipped with these rural amenities.
There are some bureaucrats who go around and label homes like this “substandard.” Households with a more realistic grasp of the facts of life, we’d call them.
There are other progressive types who are undismayed by all calamities because they are confident of “technological breakthroughs.”
