I have introduced a bill to provide that persons sentenced to the penitentiary in the future for murder, rape, robbery, arson and kidnapping would not be eligible for parole until one-half of the sentence has been served, instead of one-fourth of the sentence as under present law. I introduced this bill in 1976 and at that time it was defeated in committee. I have also introduced a bill providing that persons sentenced to life imprisonment shall be eligible for parole after serving 25 years, instead of 15 years as provided under present law.
GOVERNOR Godwin has recommended a mandatory sentence of ten years without suspension, probation or parole for the manufacturer, importer or wholesale distributor of the more dangerous drugs as well as additional mandatory sentences for escaped felons and repeated crimes of violence.
