The only way for policing to do any good, Davis said, is to let the people know such practices are going on. “As of now, they don’t.” Tomakesurveilance worthwhile, he added, the sheriff’s deputies need to do more than just ride by a business.
IF DAVIS is going to give the orders on when, where and how to do a job, “then you don’t need me,” Buntin angrily told the Supervisors, suggesting that Davis call in the deputies in the mornings and give them their assignments.
The Compensation Board has certain rules and regulations, answered Davis, maintaining that it wouldn’t reimburse the county for mileage charges if Buntin’s policing practices continued. The county will have to bear 100 percent of the costs, he warned, and advised the Supervisors to pass a resolution authorizing Buntin to continue his current policies, if they so desired, knowing that Rappahannock will have to pay the bill.
Luke maintained that the public should let Buntin know if they don’t like the way he’s doing his job. “He's an elected official.”
Davis responded that he was simply complying with the statutes, that the Compensation Board had told him it wouldn’t pay the mileage figures.
LUKE said the Compensation Board’s executive secretary, John Rasnick, told him the Board only required that the Rappahannock sheriff’s department be more specific as to where and why policing was done, when filing out the required forms. The forms are examined and signed by Buntin, said Luke, with the signature attesting to the accuracy of the report. “That’s good enough for me until the evidence is otherwise,” contended Luke.
