trical power, but these people are certain that technology will solve everything—even though nobody has figured out yet what to do with radiological wastes with a dangerous “half life” of hundreds of years but which are stored in containers that won’t last more than about 25.
THESE are the same people who don’t worry about polluted streams and ground water, because they are absolutely dead certain that some sanitary technician somewhere, somehow, in some undefined future, will discover a “technological breakthrough” that will solve this most basic requirement of a human habitation.
They can believe these things if they want to, but thus far the “breakthroughs” have been awful slow in coming. Indeed, it begins to appear that in many fields, technology has been pushed farther than it should have been, and that the solution lies in taking some sensible steps backward, rather than seeking more “progress.”
Ask those warm, watered, comfortable people in those “substandard” houses out there in the country. They may not have television, but watching a crackling log can be a lot more entertaining, as well as educational. □
