THE performance of Rappahannock students in last fall’s SRA achievement tests closely parallels nationwide scores and compares favorably with scores of students in small town school systems; Assistant Superintendent T. A. Fleetwood presented the test results to the School Board at last month’s meeting commenting that the scores showed Rappahannock students to be working at their ability level.
The tests were administered to fourth, sixth, eighth and eleventh graders in the subject areas of reading, language, math, social studies, science and the use of sources. A composite and IQ ranking is given, based on the scores in each of the individual tests. Among fourth and sixth grade scores, deviations of five points or less are not considered significant. Differences of eight points or less are not significant in eighth and eleventh grade scores.
Rappahannock fourth graders dropped below the national norm in math by six points and scored nine points above in social studies. When compared to scores from small town school systems, Rappahannock fourth graders differed significantly only in social studies, ranking 12 points higher.
