Fuel supplies dwindling
Home heating fuel supplies are dwindling throughout the state and suppliers to Rappahannock customers aren't any better off than those elsewhere. Nish North and Sons in Huntly, Riddleburg and Carter in Front Royal, and L.R. Waters in Culpeper, have all stopped accepting any new customers. Although none of the companies have had to resort to half tank refills, this possibility hasn’t been ruled out for the future.
A spokesman for Riddleburg, and Carter stressed the need for calm. "If people just don’t panic’and try to get deliveries when they don’t need it, we’ll probably be all right.” The company’s records show the heating season running a third colder than last year.
The extra drain put on area supply terminals from outside sources has added to the problems caused by record frigid temperatures. Barges carrying oil are unable to dock in Baltimore’s frozen harbor and as a result, companies from Maryland are sending caravans of trucks to terminals in Manassas, Fairfax and Springfield that normally serve only Rappahannock and nearby counties.
