Tippy Jenkins, Rappahannock County Chief Forest Warden, presented a check for $500 to the Castleton Volunteer Fire Company on January 23, This check represented their share of a Federal Grant that was made available to rural fire departments lastyear.
The money was derived from the Federal Rural Development Act of 1972. A total of $53,000 was made available for allocation to qualifying rural fire departments last year. The Virginia Division of Forestry is charged with the administration of the Virginia Grant and has absorbed all administrative costs in order to allow the full $53,000 to be available to the rural fire departments. During the past two years a total of $123, 677 in grant money has assisted 253 Virginia fire departments.
