We’ve got to stop thinking of'land as just another commodity to buy and sell for what the developers and their lawyers invariably refer to as the “highest and best use”— meaning the highest profit. In all too mahy local cases that we have observed, the truest highest and best use would have been to have simply left that pasture, that cornfield, that dairy barn alone.
Achieving what some visionaries refer to as a “land ethic” will take some doing, in a land predicated on rugged individualism and unbridled free enterprise. But it can be done, must be done, if we have any concern at all about the future that our children will inherit. □
