The granddaddy of all pear trees lives at Clifton, the property of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Rodgers on Route 729 near Flint Hill. This state champion tree measures 7 feet 9 inches in circumference and is 79 feet tall, all of which is most unusual for a fruit tree. This is an extremely ancient variety which horticulturalists could not readily identify but Mrs. Rodgers said the fruit was large and tasty and made delightful jelly.
