John W. Warner of Atoka took the oath of office Tuesday in Richmond as V irginia’s junior US Senator.
The former Navy Secretary received the oath in the Senate chamber from Chief Justice Lawrence I’Anson of the State Supreme Court.
Senator Warner’s wife, actress Elizabeth Taylor, held the Bible on which Wampr placed his left hand while he repeated the oath.
The new Republican Senator then pledged to serve all Virginians equally when he goes to Washington.
Several hundred persons, . including Democratic and Republican party leaders, were on hand for the ceremony.
The senator was interrupted by applause several times as he read from a speech he had written on a legal pad as he traveled to Richmond.
He spoke of the “Virginia spirit” that he characterized as a ‘‘renaissance of thinking” that is sweeping the nation.
Most freshman US Senators were to be sworn in Wednesday in Washington, but Warner was able to achieve a 24-hour seniority because former Senator William L. Scott resigned a bit early. Scott stepped down at midnight Monday to give Warner a lead. The regular Senate term begins at noon Wednesday.
