of excitement in 18 years but, ever-careful of unintentionally hurting someone, Eva is reticent about relating some of the funnier stories. “Someone could read it and say ‘Why, she’s talking about me,’ ” she explained.
But after some prodding from Gerk Diane Bruce, she loosened her tongue a little.
“Tell about the time a man cussed you out,” Diane urged.
“Well, I’ve taken a lot of abuse,” Eva admitted.
“Tell her about going to the hospital and' issuing a ^marriage license in the maternity ward,” Diane continued.
"Oh no, I couldn’t. That would be terrible,” Eva demurred. Even after Diane pointed out that she wouldn’t have to mention any names, Eva still resisted, maintaining that the couple would be too embarrassed if anyone figured out their identities.
“Most of the fun things that have happened here have been with marriage licenses,” she remembered, adding that she’d even issued licenses from her home during late hours of the night.
Although she hesitated to tell tales on others, Eva wasn’t as reticent when it came to herself. “I’ve always said that I have an ample mouth. Well, one day I had a lawyer (who said his brother was a dentist) pull my lip down and ask me if my teeth were real. And that wasn’t all. He asked me to type a couple of lines for him and when I finished, he stuck a dollar

Working as deputy clerk has brought more than just responsibility. “I’ve met a lot of interesting people in this job—David Brinkley, Senator McCarthy, Frank McGhee,” she noted. Eva acknowledged that she’d received invaluable
