Visits to Shenandoah National Park were down for 1978 compared to 1977, according to statistics released by Park Superintendent Robert Jacobsen. In Calendar Year 1978, 2,091,500 visitors traveled to the park—a decrease of 31.5 percent over the 3,055,000 visitors in 1977. •
Overnight stays for Calendar Year 1978 totalled 545,417 compared to 590,947 in 1977. The park had 46,600 visitors in December 1978 for a decrease of 29.6 percent over the 66,200 visitors in December 1977.
Part of the reported decrease may be attributed to new procedures for counting travel instituted on January 1, 1978. A new multiplier of 2.8 rather than 3.5 is being used for converting vehicles to visitors and travel on only three secondary roads is being counted.
As measured at Big Meadows Weather Station, the maximum temperature for December was 66 degrees and the minimum was 9 degrees. Precipitation totalled 5.54 inches.
