He is a member of the board of directors of both RLEP and PEC, as well as an associate director of the Northern Virginia 4-H Center near Front Royal. And, though inactive, he is still a member of the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire .Department.
In typically understated style, he recounts his career as a volunteer firefighter. “I joined the department in 1967, and in the spring of 1968 we went to fire school in Amissville, and everyone graduated as certified firefighters. Then I fought a couple of brush fires, and that was it.” He is inactive except at carnival time, where he can be found exhorting fairgoers to “hit the bullseye” at the dunking tank.
