takes the microphone and serves as master of ceremonies for the evening’s entertainment, yet another of his volunteer efforts.
Mr. Irwin admits that he cultivated his voice during his career with the Voice of America, where he worked for 23 years. He retired in 1985 after serving as the director of VOA’s English language morning broadcasts, which are heard around the world.
Since his retirement from VOA, Mr. Irwin and his wife Florence have turned their attentions to Caledonia Farm, where Mr. Irwin runs a 20-head cattle operation and the bed and breakfast they have opened there.
Arid in talking with Mr. Irwin about the bed and breakfast, his enthusiasm and dedication to excellence is also apparent. Always looking for ways to improve his guests’ experience, he and his family have visited more than 200 other bed and breakfast establishments in the United States and abroad. He admits that the experiences have not always been pleasant, but that each one is a learning experience — even the bad ones.
“Hospitality is the key word,” he says with a grin, and a visitor can tell that Mr. Irwin’s guests are treated to plenty of hospitality. “My guests are guests in my home,” he adds, and as the host the hospitality offered, “is what separates B&Bs not only from motels, but from each other.”
