Town water project
Last year, the Washington Town Council announced its intention to upgrade the town’s 50-year-old water system. Beset by leaks and broken pipes, the town’s water authority has been patching and mending the system for the last several years.
Although Mayor Dean Morehouse and Treasurer Brad Fisher told the council in the spring they had begun the process to secure state and federal grants and a loan for the project, it was not until early December that Mr. Fisher received word that the $231,500 Farmers Home Administration loan for the project had been approved.
A public hearing at the council’s December meeting, called to discuss the project, brought only two residents to comment. Former Mayor Newbill Miller called the project an unnecessary expenditure of taxpayers’ money.
