Trucks and Route 522
Through the year, the county’s supervisors continued to pressure the Virginia Department of Transportation to reopen Route 17 in Fauquier County. When that road, from Marshall south to Warrenton, was closed to trucks in 1984 following several fatal accidents, tractor-trailers began using Route 522 from Front Royal over Chester Gap to Route 211 at Massies Comer.
For a time last summer it seemed that VDOT might delay the reopening of Route 17 until a controversial spur around the north end of Warrenton is finished — perhaps five years in the future.
However, by year’s end, VDOT had announced that Route 17 would be reopened when the final section from Marshall south to 1-66 is completed, sometime in the spring of 1989.
Child sexual abuse
A crime which seldom sees the light of day hit the front page of the Rappahannock News during 1988. Four men were convicted of sexual abuse of children in three separate situations.
All four of the accused sex offenders were either found guilty after a trial or pleaded guilty to the charges. Three have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms. The fourth is still in jail awaiting sentencing.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke attributed the rise in sexual abuse cases to heightened public awareness of the problem.
