This past year will be remembered in Rappahannock County for the long-sought projects, including the landfill and the high school expansion, which finally came to fruition.
But it was also a year when one long-planned project, the four-laning of Route 211 from Washington to Sperryville, ran into opposition as the Virginia Department of Transportation moved to bring the project to completion.
But as important as those stories were, they were overshadowed for one long week in April as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies combed the woods around Old Hollow, searching for a kidnapper and his two hostages.
Though the selection of stories to appear in a “Top 10” list is by its nature a subjective process, the following stories were among the most important of 1988. They are not presented in any particular order of importance or ranking.
Landfill opens
As the year began, the county was seeking final approval for its design of a new landfill at the Stover property east of Amissville, racing the clock as time ran out on an agreement with Culpeper County to dispose of our waste.
