with Culpeper County and repeated requests from DVM for additional data on the site, the county opened its first landfill on Oct. 3, three days after the last extension on Culpeper’s agreement expired.
All the dumpster sites except Scrabble and Huntly have been closed, and as the year ended county administrator John McCarthy reported that the operation continues with no problems.
The county also began a recycling program with a Community Recycling Day in September. The idea has caught on, and after four months nearly 100 households are participating. The county plans to establish a recycling center at the landfill in Amissville, but at year’s end that center had not yet opened.
Route 211 widening
For nearly 10 years, since the project was halted due to funding constraints in the late 70s, the county has attempted to convince the Virginia Department of Transportation that the four-laning of Route 211 should be completed, extending the divided highway from its present end just west of Washington to Sperryville.
Last year, VDOT announced that the project would be completed. But a group of Rappahannock residents, organized as the Friends of Old Route 211, announced their opposition to the project. After collecting more than
