The Rappahannock Lions' Club has beep sponsoring annual contests locally for many years. Previous contest winners from our country have gone on to win prizes at Regional and higher levels and a few have been encouraged to pursiie professional careers in music after gaining initial success and experience at the local Bland Contest.
These Virginia Lions Music competitions are being perpetuated as a living memorial to James A. Bland, the distinguished black composer who wrote the familiar song “Carry Me Back To Olcf Virginny” which was adopted in 1940 by the General Assembly of Virginia as the official state anthem.
The Rappahannock Lions Club will award cash prizes of $50, $35 and $25 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in both vocal and instrumental catagories.
There’s still plenty of time to vocalize, toughen your lip or limber up your fingers. So rehearse your musical act and share your talent with friends and family. You just may be better than you realize. You’ll never know unless you try.
