Mr. Burke’s workload increased from 1,377 inspections in 1992 to 1,519 in 1993. He also had more walk-in and scheduled consultations.
Mr. Burke said that many of the large houses are being built by contractors from Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., and local contractors have problems getting some of these jobs. However, he said that many local contractors are staying busy with smaller jobs. He estimated that about half the construction jobs are going to local contractors.
At the height of the recession, outside contractors were getting most of the jobs when construction activity almost came to a standstill in Northern Virginia, he said. They were willing to submit very low bids, just to keep crews working. With construction picking up in other areas, this is less of a problem. However, outside contractors still get many of the large jobs because architects from Washington are used to working with them.
Mr. Burke said he does not expect to see building activity at the level it was in 1987 when many smaller, more modest houses were being built, but there is still more i than enough activity to keep him busy.
He expects a lot of his time in 1994 will involve constructibn of the addition at the elementary school. He said he hopes to visit the site at least once a day once construction starts.
