“Why not market the lettuce with the aphids?” I said I had taken some infested heads of lettuce home and it was easy to rinse the bugs off when I separated the lettuce leaves from the head. Couldn’t other consumers do this? i
“Yes, they could, but they won’t” said Bums. “They’ve been indoctrinated to believe that bugs and cosmetic flaws degrade produce.
“Ironcially, the opposite is more likely; the prettier the produce, the more chemicals is has been treated with,” he said.
While shopping in Gaint Food recently, I spotted a bug on a head of lettuce. I snatched it up, took it to the check-out counter, and proundly pointed the insect out to the clerk. “Let me get you another head,” the clerk said apologetically.
“No Way,” I replied. “I like bugs on my lettuce.”
