Alexei is head of the international relations department of a ceramics reseach institute outside Moscow who had waited six hours at Sheremetyevo to meet my delayed flight. At the time the election results were still unknown.

Driving into Moscow I asked Alexei who had he voted for. “Shakhrei” he answered. And what party does he represent? Alexei seemed a little embarrassed, “Oh I can’t remember now, but he is young, energetic, educated,” repeating these attributes several times as if to compensate for not being able to attach him to a party.
On our way into Moscow, Alexei told me he had been to China recently. “The Chinese live quite well. They have plenty of food. They did not try to change everything at once, but kept their reform process under control. We should have followed their example.”
Walking to my room at the Belgrade Hotel on Smolensky Square, I met three floor maids having a ► smoke.
