After selling boats for 25 years and racing cars for 12, Charlie Coombs has embarked on a new career.
Mr. Coombs specializes in creating 17th and 18th century furniture reproductions, ranging from primitive through high country style. He constructs furniture using Rappahannock cherry, walnut, white pine and poplar, and sometimes uses heart pine salvaged from old buildings. Other woods used are mahogany from Honduras and Africa, and maple and curly maple from Pennsylvania.
He harvests much of the wood in Rappahannock by himself, or with the help of Chris Bird and his portable sawmill.
