A Monday morning storm dropped more snow, sleet and freezing rain on the county, causing more days to be missed from school and eliminating the possibility of using the Martin Luther King Holiday to make up one of the missed school days.
The storm also caused the cancellation of the program honoring Dr. King scheduled for the theatre Monday.
The storm continued with sleet and freezing rain Monday night leaving everything covered with a layer of ijce by Tuesday morning.
The storm followed a bitterly cold weekend. According to Sperrvville weather watcher Dennis Wingfield, on Saturday the low was 2 degrees and the high was 11. On Sunday the low was 0 and the high was 18.
“You have to go back to December 22, 1989, to get a day as cold," Mr. Wingfield said. On that day the high was Id and the low was -1. Mr. Wingfield said that so far this January has averaged 11 degrees colder than January 1993.
Highway department crews were kept busy Monday and Tuesday, trying to clear the roads. Ennis Jenkins, who was in charge of the local office Monday, said that the crews had enough sand and salt to take care of this storm, "but then we’ll have to order more."
Mr. Jenkins said VDOT uses a mixture of sand and salt on hard surfaced roads and sand mixed with gravel on dirt roads. He said that the use of sand and chemicals is running far ahead of last year’s pace so far this year. However, he said employees are using regular amounts and not holding back on chemical usage- . , ,
Tuesday marked the ninth day missed from school with more missed, days likely this week. The schedule had five extra daysbuilt in that could have been used for a vacation the week after Easter if they hadn’t been needed to make up for days missed for snow. Those days are now used up, so the only break for Easter will be the Friday before the weekend.
The schedule of mid-term exams has also been extended, and the day set aside for teachers to work at school grading exams, will instead be a school day. Teachers are expected to take their work day at home on Saturday after exams.
