Newland feels that such alterations would provide vehicles with a more secure surface. He said he knows many of his neighbors enjoy riding horses and bikes, as well as walking on the road, and he does not foresee paving interfering with this. He said, he would not support tar and chipping if it diminished the "charm and beauty of the highway."
"It would not affect the aesthetic element, its charm and country elegance,” he said.
Not all were in concurrence with Newland.
Several questioned whether the road truly qualified as rural rustic. VDOT representative Garrett Moore responded that with the current level of traffic on the road, and its potential of turning into a cut-through to major roads in the area, it does not technically qualify for the status.
