“The Deep Woods” is found at the end of Hinson’s Ford Road in Amissville, up Mossie Lane, and through a winding driveway with meadows on both sides.
This is the third house on this year’s House Tbur, sponsored by the Episcopal Church Women of Trinity Church, Bromfield Parish, in Washington, and those who made the long, curvy drive to see it on Oct. 18 or 19 will be rewarded with lovely views and a fascinating, beautiful home, enjoyed by its original owners. Bud and Doris Rowzie, their five children and 13 grandchildren.
Although The Deep Woods is only 30 years old, the Rowzie’s roots in Rappahannock County go back much further. Bud Rowzie was bom at home in Amissville, delivered by Dr. Boldridge who came on horseback. Growing up, the whole Rowzie family fished the Rappahannock River from the banks, and picked watercress along the very property Bud and Doris now own. It was Doris Rowzie who saw the advertisement for the property in the papier in the 70s, and convinced her husband that they should look at it. They camped on the property for about 10 years, before the house was built.
After the family’s first visit to walk the land, their young son Russell named the house by asking, “When are we going to go back to the deep woods?”
Outside, The Deep Woods is cradled by beautiful shrubbery and gardens, a fountain, mature dogwood and weeping cherry trees, vine-covered pillars and garden statuary. Although the river cannot be seen from the house itself, the gleam of the pond enlivens the views from decks, porches and patio.
Inside the house, charm and graciousness are the key. The living room, furnished in rosy colors, is restful and inviting. Overstuffed chairs, lace curtains and a lovely fireplace with a mantel that can hold the countless stockings needed for the family’s Christmas celebrations contribute to its beauty. The dining room features a huge brick fireplace, a dining table that seats 20 and the Rowzie’s collection of Lenox figures.
