"When we were in the city we could see maybe Class 3 stars. When you come out here you can see Class 5 and the Milky Way,"' she said.
The class of a star depends upon its luminosity with class one, which she said are often the only stars visible to those who live in major urban areas such as D.C., being the brightest. Class 6 are considerably dimmer. These she said, were viewable by the ancient Greeks, but lost to most modern star gazers.
Hays is a strong supporter of the local lighting ordinance which was sent to the county's Board of Supervisors by the county's Planning Commission in November 2001 with a recommendation for approval. Since then it has sat, waiting for a champion to revive it.
