At Dominion Virginia Power, we know how to prepare for natural disasters. Ice storms, record snowfalls, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes — we’ve faced them all. But no amount of preparation could stop the devastation of Hurricane Isabel. A storm the size of Colorado, she toppled trees, downed power poles, tangled lines and cut off electricity to over 1.8 million of our customers. In countless cases throughout our service area, the electrical system had to be rebuilt, not simply repaired.
In all, enough wire to stretch from Virginia to Canada had to be restrung. Over 10,000 utility poles were replaced and over 1,000 tractor-trailer truckloads of new parts were installed. For making this possible, we are extremely grateful for the dedicated work of our employees and all of the partner companies listed below who assisted in our restoration efforts. At the height of the crisis, over 12,000 men and women, from 22 states and Canada, were working tirelessly to get the lights back on.
While they were working, thousands of our customers could do nothing but wait. We know the difficulties and stress you suffered. And we know how much you missed the conveniences and security you depend on from electricity. As you sat around in the glow of candles and flashlights, we thank you for your patience and understanding during this unprecedented event.
