county are unable to punish illegal parkers.
No ordinance exists for that in the county, explained Sheriff Larry Sherertz. Thus, he said, police officers are only able to ask for voluntary compliance, and only if they see the violation take place. He added that he has advised his deputies against waiting around to watch for such violations, or going into nearby restaurants to speak with poor parkers.
He said that while working in other counties he had seen parking tickets work well.
These tickets he said, can be written for the vehicle and must be paid by its owner. He referred to them as a “useful tool” which carried a “strong message.”
He believes that if word got out that such tickets were being given, county residents would think twice before parking in illegal zones such as the one in Flint Hill.
But the problem does not stop at town boundaries.
Bob Lander said there is an issue of illegal parking even in Old Hollow, where those hiking in Shenandoah National Park often ignore signage.
Board members did not wait until the issue’s allotted spot on the agenda came up. Right then, in the midst of the public forum, the group voted to examine the creation of a county parking ordinance.
“That’s fast action,” said board chairman Pete Estes.
