ed a lecture on Mars sponsored by the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection. While there she listened as, astronomer Francois-Marie Patomi urged listeners who felt strongly about the county's night skies to contact their local supervisor and urge them to take action on this issue.
"If you're going to keep the skies dark," he said, "it will take something like this."
Hays took the advice to heart and contacted each of the supervisors and questioned them regarding their concerns on the ordinance. She then worked on conducting analysis which board member Bryant Lee had requested.
After discovering that one of the issues concerning the board was the need to purchase a light meter which would measure the brightness of county fixtures she purchased one with her own funds. The meter is similar to the one used in Albermarle County, she said, and can be easily calibrated.
