The Rappahannock 4-H Livestock Club is the oldest 4-H club in the county. It began in the early 1970s as an overall 4-H club which met in individual homes.
C.G. and David Thornhill were among the first 4-H members from the county to participate in the Culpeper-Madison-Rappahannock Farm Show. The club later evolved into the Rappahannock 4-H Livestock Club and the members actively participated in raising and showing livestock. The majority of the projects included lambs, swine and beef.
In the late 1970s, the club began fundraising for the purchase of its projects. A major fundraiser and something many county residents looked forward to was the 4th of .July sale of lamb burgers, rib eyes and sliced lamb. The discontinuation of the festivities in Washington has made it increasingly harder to raise funds for the purchase of the projects.
The club reached a peak in membership around the mid 1980s with 18 to 20 members participating. At that time, some 60-70 steers were shown at the C-M-R Farm Fair. Presently, there are nine members who raise beef, swine, lambs, goats and poultry.
