The Washington Town Council meeting last Wednesday included a discussion on the town’s financial liability, specifically concerning the state’s possible repeal of the Meals and Lodging Tax which would significantly impact the town’s ability to pay its bills.
During the public forum at the end of the meeting Washington resident Bill Tieckelmann asked the council what costs residents would incur if the town was unable to pay any of its bills, especially through the loss of assets if the Meals and Lodging Tax is repealed.
Seventy to 80 percent of the town’s income comes from the meals and lodging tax collected by the Inn at Little Washington. That number goes even higher when the tax money from the town’s four bed and breakfasts is included.
