It’s cold. It’s windy. It’s threatening to rain.
Never mind.
With ruddied cheeks and muddied legs, Shay Bell’s Varsity Panthers are practicing hard.
With nine seniors on his roster backed by a healthy squadron of sophomores and juniors, Bell is confident that this season will be another successful one. He did pick up one freshman this year, James White. Last season, they finished second in the Bull Run District and headed to regionals where they had a heartfelt 2-1 loss to Riverhead.
While they did suffer a 3-2 loss to the Warren County Wildcats last Thursday, they will play them again today on their home field. There’s a good chance, the outcome will be different.
Bell, now in his seventh season as Rappahannock’s head coach, commands the attention of his players. There is little horsing around. But, there’s also a lot of smiling and the camaraderie is evident as players give each other the high five when a ball finds net or when keeper Austin Burnett saves a hard shot.
