You may want to consider fruit bearing trees and shrubs when working on your landscape design. It's one more way to add color and keep it longer.
There are some caveats to consider before you decide. Fruit will attract birds and other types of
I wildlife. Bees are drawn to the fruit. Part of the harvest will end up on the ground and necessitate a clean up. Ybu must also research the species and find out if the plantings are self-propagating or if male and female plants are required. Ornamentals are smaller in structure and may be more affected by droughts, frosts and damaging winds.
Having said that, there are
|| advantages as well. The ornamentals' small size makes them ideal for a small property, i Pruning and maintenance can i keep the proper structure for the | environment. When planted with a consistent background such as ! evergreens, results can be quite striking.
Some are excellent candidates for use with trellises to create a i beautiful wall of color. This method is called “espalier" in which plantings are trained to an existing i form. Color is not limited to bark. | foliage or flowers - the fruit itself is colorful and will last longer through ; the seasons. Some fruit bearers ! have all four accents - interesting bark, foliage, beautiful flowers and ! then colorful fruit.
