In nearly a quarter century as a judge, Foley guessed he’s revisited and lightened sentences about a half dozen times.
Occasionally, he’ll hear from people who thank him for a tough sentence that turned their lives around.
A couple of months ago, a man whom Foley had sent to jail approached the judge outside the courthouse during a break between trials.
“I’m doing fine,”1 Foley said the man told him. “That [jail sentence] was all I needed. I’ve got at good job. I got married.’ You don’t hear too many of those. There maybe more out there than you know, and you hope so.”
