atucg n . cicbuuci of Sperryville extended a greeting of welcome to all those attending the Liberty Bell program, stating that this was a very appropriate time for such a patriotic celebration, since it was being held on the eve of the town election. Mr. Fletcher related important events in the history of the Liberty Bell, and talked about its importance to the American people. He expressed his appreciation to those who attended the program and those participating in it, and stated that he felt confident that Rappahannock would do its part in the savings bond drive, now being. launched, as it . had done in the past ones -held— in the county.
The National Anthem was sung by a quartet composed of Mrs. Hlen Kilby, Mrs. Lucy Clater, Jack Brown, and L. J. Turner.
Dr. W. G. Pendleton delivered an address on “The Meaning of Independence Todfcy,?’ speaking about the meaning of liberty and security. Real liberty he pointed out is only experienced by those who live entirely alone and do not owe their fellowmen a debt of fellowship. Children think of liberty as being unrestrained in their actions, but this has been proven to be unsatisfactory by the many accidents in which they are involved. When a player goes out to participate in the playing of a game he has to observe the rules of the game in order to be a success in the game. He talked about the two parts of a man, the lower self which leads to slavery and the upper self which can lead the way to liberty. True liberty he pointed out can only be brought about by laws which are properly enforced, but the American people are losing their liberties by having too many laws which are not properly enforced. Dr. Pendleton concluded his speech with words “And Ye Shall Know the Truth, and the Truth Shall Make You Free.”
