Treatment For Lice

Treat cattle for lice before putting them in winter quarters, J. O. Rowell, Extension entomologist at VPI advises.
Rowell warns that lice often are the cause of decline in milk and' beef production. , v
They should be destroyed any time they are found, on animals, but it is especially important to control them at this time of year, since they reproduce and spread rapidly in warm congested quarters.
A single treatment with a 11 per cent DDT spray, or 10 per cent DDT dust should eradicate lice- completely on cattle not in the milking herd or being finished for slaughter. ^ One application of lindane spray can be used on dairy animals and beef animals alike. Apply lindane at the rate of li pounds of a 25 per cent gamma wettable powder to 100 gallons of water. Lindane will control both lice and mange mites.
Rowell warns, however, not to use lindane sprays on calves under three months old.
