Here are some tips from A. S. Beecher and A. G. Smith, Jr., of the horticulture staff at VPI:
After the first frost .kills the dahlias, cut the tops off at a point about six inches above the ground. Dig the dahlia carefully 'so the tubers won't be injured by the spading fork. Before putting the clumps in storage let them dry so the soil will shake off easily. Inspect the tubers closely and discard any that are injured or not healthy. Cut the stem back to within two or three incres of the crown.__ " ,• - " Proper storage is important. A basement where the temperature is around 4-0° is ideal, but many ^cellars with furnace heat are Wanner_ and drier. One solution . to the problem of a dry, twarm cellar is to make a small storage room by partitioning off an area of the cellar. Locate the area by 'a window so the temperature can ; be kept low. The room also would be a good storage place for apples
