In his speech to the Virginia Education Association the other day, the Governor observed that “some so-called authorities on the subject of education tell us that the average citizen is. in no position to answer these questions/' “I freely admit/’ Battle said, “that I am in the same position as the average taxpayer in Virginia.” But he wenton and said a mouthful.
As this column has repeatedly pointed out, the school authorities are getting further and further away from the thinking of the taxpayers in their theories on education._
Every few years the General Assembly sends a commission around to contact the public and in every case the commission has returned with a report that the people want more teaching of the “three R's and the fundamentals.” But the public school heirarchy goes on devising new methods of bypassing the fundamentals in favor of vague and impractical formulas for purifying and ennobling youth.
“In my opinion,” the Governor told Virginia educators, “there should be no room for argument •s far as Spelling, reading, writing, arithmetic, grammar, and civil government are concerned, especially in these trying days when the principles of government which we hold so dear are so widely attacked and misrepresented .. ."
