The Hag«r8tofwn Almanac for 1361 is out on the counters of the drug stores, and all who were reared by its predictions will study it faithfully and plant and plow 'according to the signs.” I know that the elderly fellow who used to plant the home garden cited his almanac signs for all garden* ing *— planting, cultivating, and gathering. He swore that if butter* beans were planted on the dark of the moon that they would not climb the poles. There were many other signs to which he adhered with utmost faith, and the family joked about it—hut they never criticized his garden, for he (was quite successful. He never ex* plained whether he thought the purchasing of good seeds and the proper application of fertiliser had as much to do with the success of the garden as had his following of signs of the almanac. It was a joke in the family—behind his back, of course, for his feelings were spared—and the "signs of the almanac" were used on every occasion, until one of the sons of the family complained of a short-tailed shirt and said he knew it had been made on the ,"up-go of the moon."
