With the completion of one project another always opens and thus again the time has arrived to try and make you dear readers Japanese Beetle Conscious. Prospects for a bumper crop are better than ever, thus prospects for greater damage to crops, fruit and pastures is inevitable. Control is fairly simple and inexpensive, however, a persistent enemy requires persistent resistance; just another case of survival of the fittest.
Now for some pretty plain talk:
Your Maker endowed most of you with more brains and greater physical strength than He allowed the Japanese beetle. Mankind has thus developed greater and more efficient mental and physical skills. No matter whether the problem be Japanese Beetle or clothing your hide, you should and can lick it.
Years of scientific research have revealed that 2 lbs. of 50% wettable DDT powder per 100 gallons of water applied as a spray is the most effective means of controlling the adult beetle and that milky disease spore dust is the most effective means of combating the Japanese Beetle in the grub stage of its life cycle. This dust is applied as is and may be done easily. The DDT can be purchased at most any of our stores or farm supply dealers. The spore dust can be purchased from any of the seed houses. One catalogue quotes 'it at $4.50 per pound, but your County Board of Supervisors has made it available at $1.25 per pound to Rappahannock land owners. They realize that this is an agricultural county, that the farmers' welfare determines the welfare of the county. They purchased the spore dust at wholesale and are meeting the half of the cost to you.
Many of us squawk for this or that, but apparently don't care about trying to help ourselves; yet were I or any member of the board to say. “Hi, Insect 1” upon meeting, you would feel insulted.
