Harrison Is Honor Man
Afe Hampton Institute
Charles Henry Harrison, son of James and Mandy Harrison of Woodville, graduated from Hampton Institute, June 4, with highest honors. He received 'a bachelor of science degree, having done his major studies in chemistry and minor studies in biology and mathematics. The commencement address was delivered by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethume, president emelfitus of Bethume Cookman College, Daytona Beach, Fla.
Those attending Hampton Institute commencement exercises from Rappahannock were James, Mandy, and George Harrison, and Samuel Glasker.
Immediately after the commencement exercises, Charles Harrison received his commission as a second lieutenant, artillery, in the United States Army Reserve, along with thirty-three other Hampton students. The colorfuul commissioning ceremony took place on the beautiful campus lawn. His gold second-lieutenant bars were pinned on by his mother. During this ceremony he was also officially designated as a Distinguished Military Graduate of Hampton Institute.
On June 15 Lieut. Harrison received a direct appointment as a second lieutenant in the regular army and was sworn in on the same day. He is now at home with his parents awaiting orders to report to his initial duty station.
The N.A.A.C.P. are having a Square Dance Friday night, June 22, at Pine Knot Inn. Music by Huffman Brothers.
There were services at Promise Land Baptist church Sunday at 11 a.m. by the pastor, Rev. O. D. Jackson. Lunch was served at 1:30 and at 3 p.m. Rev. Williams and his wife from Washington, D. C., preached, and Sister William sang and played. There was a large congregation.
Haywood Poles returned Sunday to Philadelphia, Pa.
William and David Summers are visiting their father, William E. Summers, at Canton, Qhio.
Mr& Jean Robinson of Front Royal is visiting her mother, Mrs. Bert Green.
Forrest Freeman had the misfortune to cut his foot very bad and was taken to Front Royal hospital for treatment.
Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Webb of King and Queen county is visiting her sister, Mrs. Georgie Porter, and visited Mr. Porter at University hospital on Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Holland had for dinner guests Saturday Rev. and Mrs. Ellis Turner, and Mrs. Shoemaker and. Mrs. Wright of Washington, D. C.
