No place in the world do people enjoy teasing as much as they do in Rappahannock.
A favorite sport among the men is telling you how hen-pecked they are, and teasing each other about being hen-pecked. The teasing, itself, is proof they aren’t; for if they were, the subject would be a very touchy one.
This is one reason the men in Washington got so much pleasure from the election of the all-woman government. The Trial Justice’s original statement about the women always had managed the town and “might as well make it legal” showed this trend.
Another spark showing the love of teasing is the exaggerated pretense of ill-will between the two larger towns of the county. Each one of the towns pretends to be alternately jealous, spiteful, or hating each other. Residents of each will berate the habits of the residents of the other—but they always take a time iwhen they are certain there is someone present who will take up the argument and keep it going, just for the fun of it.
