Hudson Receives
‘Tree Farm’ Certificate

A ‘‘Tree Farm’’ certificate was presented to L. R. Hudson of Slate Mills on June 19 at the State Forest Nursery, Charlottesville.
The “Tree Farm1’ program in Virginia is sponsored by Virginia Forests, Inc., in co-operation with, the Virginia Forest Service, VPI Extension Service, and the Soil Conservation Service. Under this program landowners receive certification and agree to manage their timber area according to approved forestry practices. It is a program designed to recognize and honor those landowners who are practicing sound forestry measures on their woodland acreage.
Its purpose is to encourage Virginia landowners to maintain or increase the value of their tree “crop” so that the forests of the state will be a perpetual source of income to their owners and to the many thousands of Virginians who are employed directly or indirectly in the harvesting or processing of that “crop.” To date, in Virginia, there are 48 certified “Tree Farms” with a total acreage of 210,142. Approximately 24 more tree farms whose acreage will total nearly 150,000 will receive certification during this year.
Any forest or woodland owner, whether he has much or little acreage, is eligible to reoeive a ^'Tree Farm” award if he meets the standards as established by the Virginia Forestry Committee. Landowners desiring further information should contact your County Agent, District Forester, or Soil Conservation Technician.
