On Wednesday, July 4; we celebrate our 175th anniversary.
We, the people of the United States, are 175 years old, and yet, as individuals, we are the same that we were in 1776. We believe in liberty for individuals, just as did Thomas Jefferson, who penned the lines quoted above; j’ust as did George Washington, a wealthy planter who could have sat at home in comfort, but preferred to spend a winter in Valley Forge defending man’s liberty; just as have 175 years of men and women who still believe the lines ‘‘their . . . Rights ... are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
The struggle to maintain liberty has been hard, it is hard, and always will be hard. It is difficult to face service in the armed forces to preserve liberty. It is diffcult to remember in daily living that the other man has equal rights with you and he must be treated fairly. It will be difficult in the future* as it is now, to convince all men, regardless of greed and jealousy, that each man has the right to liberty and choice, and that communism, totalitarianism, nor any other ’ism can be forced up&n him.
Liberty is our birthright; 175 years old.
